Powering a Sustainable Future with Power BI: Analyzing Renewable Energy Performance & Impact 

The Challenge 

The dataset provided contains comprehensive information on renewable energy generation, sustainability performance, and environmental impact across multiple energy sources such as solar, wind, hydro, and biomass. The dataset spans several years and regions, including metrics on energy generation, capacity utilization, CO₂ savings, carbon credits, and financial performance. However, the raw data, as presented, poses several challenges for stakeholders aiming to track sustainability goals and operational efficiency: 

Data Disconnection:

Renewable energy data is scattered across multiple systems — including generation logs, financial reports, and environmental trackers — making it difficult to consolidate and analyze in a unified manner. 

Operational Visibility:

Without a structured analytical framework, comparing performance across different renewable sources or assessing utilization efficiency (CUF) and demand met by renewables becomes time-consuming and inconsistent. 

Goal Tracking Limitations:

Organizations often face difficulties in tracking progress toward Net Zero targets, measuring CO₂ reduction, or calculating ROI on green investments due to lack of integrated reporting. 

 

The Solution 

We utilized Power BI to design a comprehensive and interactive sustainability dashboard, integrating data from diverse renewable energy systems into one unified reporting platform. The report enables organizations to monitor energy generation, consumption, carbon savings, and long-term sustainability performance effectively. 

The report covers the following topics: 

Executive & Impact Overview: Summary of total renewable generation, CO₂ avoided, water saved, households powered, and revenue from carbon credits — providing a high-level view of environmental and financial impact. 

Generation & Consumption Analysis: Examination of energy generation versus consumption, Capacity Utilization Factor (CUF), and demand met by renewables across sectors, with insights into top-performing and underperforming sources. 

Sustainability & Future Outlook: Evaluation of Net Zero progress, CO₂ reduction achievements, carbon credit revenue, and financial KPIs such as ROI, Payback Period, and LCOE, along with projections for investment and capacity expansion through 2035.
